Long before the rest of us, Conrado Ramos Estrada had become accustomed to wearing face masks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 57-year-old painter and construction worker avoided eating and breathing due to his increasingly enormous nose, but he opted to conceal it nonetheless.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThey would stare at me,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0the Portchester, NY resident told\u00a0The Post<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cChildren would ask their mothers what happened to me \u2014 and I would get around it by using a face mask all the time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

His enormous snout could be more than just an eyesore; it could prevent him from breathing, make him snore, and generally be an annoyance.\u00a0\u201cIt had reached my lips and whenever I took a bite when I ate that would touch the spoon,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n

Now that Estrada\u2019s nose and mask are out of the way, his loved ones can see his genuine smile.<\/p>\n

Dr. Thomas Romo, director of facial plastic reconstructive surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, was a random acquaintance of mine, and a fortuitous meeting was the catalyst for everything.<\/p>\n

When Estrada arrived at Romo\u2019s Bronxville house with a painting team around five months ago, Romo told The Post that he\u00a0\u201cwas sort of excited\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0to meet him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was a bad one,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said of Estrada\u2019s\u00a0\u201cproboscis,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0which appeared as if he had\u00a0\u201ca p**is on his nose,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0according to Romo\u2019s description.\u00a0\u201cIt was a smoldering infection \u2026 and it would have just kept going.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He felt compelled to take Estrada aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t mind telling people what I think,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Romo admitted.<\/p>\n

Estrada had suffered from rhinophyma, which was the cause of his nose\u2019s deformity, for a very long time.<\/p>\n

The enlarged sebaceous (oil) glands cause the skin at the tip of the nose to thicken, become pimpled, and pitted in people with this disorder.<\/p>\n

Although it has been identified as a kind of rosacea, an inflammatory skin disease, the exact origin of the disorder remains a mystery.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had spent six years seeing doctors and skin specialists and nothing would get better,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0When it comes to rhinophyma, there is currently no cure.<\/p>\n

Nose reduction surgery was the sole option for severe cases like Estrada\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Although it does occur, rhinophyma is more commonly seen in males. It often starts in middle age and can progress uncontrollably unless surgical intervention is done.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hadn\u2019t seen a rhinophyma in maybe 20 years,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0said Dr. Romo, who performed Estrada\u2019s operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has to be affecting his life,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Romo thought,\u00a0\u201chis relationship with other people \u2026 and his ability to get work, and [his] self-esteem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romo is no stranger to\u00a0\u201cpro bono\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0labor; his Little Baby Face Foundation helps underprivileged youngsters who suffer from facial defects get the surgery they need.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot many people know how to fix this thing,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he continued, and health insurance might not pay for it either.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe saw me, and he gave me a hug,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Estrada told The Post.\u00a0\u201cHe said, \u2018I\u2019m going to help you.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Estrada was in the operation room in no time at all after a few days of paperwork and signatures. He is now back to work and living his life, about four weeks after surgery.<\/p>\n

Romo said that the changes extend beyond the contours of his face. He said of Estrada\u2019s post-op images,\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019d think he won an Olympic gold medal.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cHis happy face and chest are on full display. I am so happy for him!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Romo put it,\u00a0\u201ca better and more productive person in society\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0is someone who exudes confidence. I\u2019m making every effort to support my community. It is my hope that this community thrives.<\/p>\n

The response from those closest to Estrada has been\u00a0\u201cenormous,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0according to him.\u00a0\u201cI believe God sent an angel to take care of me \u2014 and that\u2019s how I see Dr. Romo,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he told The Post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
