Woman’s boyfriend sparks huge debate for asking her to cover the bills with her $4 million inheritance

A Reddit user’s boyfriend has left people divided

A man asked his girlfriend to cover all the bills after she inherited $4 million and it’s sparked heated debate online.

If $4 million fell into most of our bank accounts, we’d probably jump up and down for joy and think many of our problems were solved, however, coming into great sums of money is hardly ever straightforward.

A woman took to Reddit thread r/AmItheA**hole to call on social media users’ thoughts, explaining after her grandfather passed away, she came into a sum of ‘a little over $4 million from his estate’.

She added that she ‘had no idea’ her grandpa even had ‘much money’ and believed all of it would go to her mom.

“After I got over the initial shock, I took the opportunity to finally quit my job (which I really hated), as I don’t have any outstanding debts and can easily live off of $40,000 a year,” she said. “I’m pretty introverted and am more than happy to stay at home working on art/music/other interests and gaming.”

However, despite the influx in cash giving the Redditor the opportunity to leave her hated job and seek a more enjoyable way of life, it didn’t make matters easier with her partner.

She explained: “Ever since I inherited the money, my boyfriend has been pressuring me to cover all of the rent and utilities (about $1200 a month) for our apartment and start putting money away into a joint savings fund.”

The Reddit user clarified that she and her partner were not married and had only been going out for a year and a half.

She also noted that she continues to pay her half of the rent and has started paying a housekeeper to come in and clean their home a few times a week.

She closed by saying: “I told my boyfriend he isn’t entitled to my money and he said I was being selfish for expecting him to still contribute to the rent when I could easily afford to pay for the whole thing. AITA?”

And it didn’t take long for people to flood to the comments to weigh in.

Some social media users were firmly on her side and insisted the boyfriend was displaying multiple ‘red flags’.

“A Russian May Day parade doesn’t have that many red flags,” one person joked.

“NTA. This is YOUR money. YOU have this money and YOU will do whatever YOU want to do with it,” said another.

“I could see discussing doing DIFFERENT work but the idea that he should just chill and live off your inheritance?”

“Bad look dude. I have a suspicion the money will last a lot longer than the boyfriend,” someone added.

However, others felt differently about it.

One commenter said they’d ‘seriously reconsider my relationship if my gf received a large inheritance and used that to immediately retire and bum around for the rest of her life’.

While a second said that while the boyfriend’s actions were ‘inappropriate’, they couldn’t just expect the relationship ‘to simply go on unchanged without any discussion about the future’.

And a third said: “I completely understand the BF perspective. This is a relationship over a year with cohabitation so it’s pretty serious by almost any standard.

“The OP has essentially made a choice that puts the BF in the awkward position of being expendable.

“OP has decided to restructure an entire lifestyle without including him. In that regard, OP carries some AH burden.”
