Teen dies after jumping into ‘electrified lake’ during 4th of July celebrations

Jesse Hamric, 18, was celebrating Independence Day with his friends

A Colorado teen has died after jumping into an ‘electrified lake’ during Independence Day celebrations.

Jesse Hamric, 18, dove into the water at Smith Mountain Lake outside Roanoke, Virginia in the early hours of Thursday morning.

However, friends of the teen immediately knew something was terribly wrong.

Jesse’s pals jumped in and immediately found themselves shocked once they had entered the water.

WDBJ reports that despite their own injuries, they were able to pull Jesse out from the water.

One of Jesse’s friends began performing CPR on the teen while another rapidly went looking for help.

At around 4am local time, paramedics and other rescue crews arrived at the scene, who rushed Jesse to a nearby hospital.

However, the teen later died in hospital.

A subsequent investigation by fire crews concluded that electrical currents were present in the water the teen jumped into.

Police have since determined it was caused by stray voltage spreading from a dock at a nearby residence.

No foul play is suspected.

Jesse’s friends sustained minor injuries as a result of diving into the water in an attempt to save him.

Alex Schwab, Jesse’s friend, told KDVR: “Ever since I first met that kid, I mean, he’s like one of a kind. You see him and you just, like, he always has a smile on his face.

“Still can’t even like process it. I’m so upset by it.”

Jesse had just graduated from high school in May, excelling on both the football and baseballs teams during his time there.

GoFundMe page has since been set up to help Jesse’s family.

The fundraiser reads: “Please join us in supporting the beloved Hamric family. They are true servants of our community who make life in Steamboat Springs better by all that they do and by who they are!

“Jesse was a dearly loved friend, bringing light and positivity everywhere he went, and he will be missed everyday.”

While Independence Day is meant to be a time of celebration for Americans, we do hear tragic stories every year.

Last Thursday, 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew placed a lit firework on his head and it erupted.

McGrew then collapsed, according to Dorchester County Sheriff’s department, before he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11.10pm.

Coroners have put his cause of death due to ‘massive head injuries’ which would’ve killed him immediately.
