Father learns his daughters died in crash while tracking their phones return from amusement park

Hailey Trumble, 19, and Shelby Trumble, 17, tragically died on August 1

A dad has spoken out after losing his two daughters in a fatal car accident.

On August 1, Hailey Trumble, 19, and Shelby Trumble, 17, were on the way back from a day out at Seabreeze Amusement Park in Rochester, New York, when tragedy struck.

The girls’ father, Brian Trumble, had been texting and calling the pair as they were driving to their home in Fulton and initially didn’t think anything of their lack of response because he knew there wasn’t very good cell reception in the area they were travelling.

However Brian grew increasingly concerned when he still hadn’t heard from Shelby and Hailey by 6pm.

The 45-year-old father then tracked his daughters’ phones on Find My Friends and found them to be on Ferris Road in Cato, around three miles away from where he was.

Informing his girlfriend, who had been with Hailey and Shelby that day, of their whereabouts, she told Brian that she’d heard that ‘something happened on Ferris Road’.

Brian then rushed to their location and ended up receiving the news that no parent wants to hear.

He was met by police officers at the scene who told him that two girls had been involved in a serious car accident and that one had died.

They couldn’t reveal all the details to him at first, but Brian went on to learn that it was his daughter Shelby that had died.

A short time later, he got the news that Hailey had also tragically died.

“I just sat on my bumper and I couldn’t stand up,” he recalled to People.

Brian went on to hail the support he received from officers and firemen at the scene as ‘great’.

As to what happened to Shelby and Hailey, Brian thinks the girls were unfamiliar with the ‘hilly, windy road’ they were driving on and make have lost control of their car after going ‘too fast’ over the top of a hill.

Another person who survived the ordeal was involved in the collision and transported to hospital to be treated for her injuries.

She’s since been named as Robin Latham, who is reportedly now in a stable condition following the collision last week.

Police are still investigating the incident and say it’s ‘too early’ to know what happened just yet.

Sheriff Brian Schenck of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office told CNY Central: “It’s much too early to say exactly what happened, and what caused this crash and what factors were involved. But we are looking at every piece of evidence that we can.”

In an update posted on Facebook on Monday (August 5) the Sherrif’s Office said that Shelby and Hailey’s vehicle ‘crested a hill and crossed into the opposite lane, striking a second vehicle’.

It added that the investigation is ‘active and ongoing’ and that ‘no additional information will be released until the investigation is completed’.
