Britney Spears may have to keep paying eye-watering child support to ex despite youngest child turning 18

Kevin Federline’s lawyer has spoken out on Britney Spears paying his client child support

Kevin Federline’s lawyer has spoken out on the huge amount of child support that Britney Spears has been paying her ex.

Spears and Federline were married between 2004 and 2007 and welcomed two sons together over the course of their relationship.

In light of Spears’ struggles over the years, Federline was given full custody of their kids in 2006 and the ‘Toxic’ hitmaker has been paying him child support ever since.

It’s estimated that the singer had paid around $5 million to her ex over the years – a sum that’s been labeled as ‘extraordinary’.

“The amount of money Britney has given Kevin for the two boys is extraordinary and it is enough for any man to support an entire family, which is what she believes he has done,” a source close to Spears told MailOnline.

While it was reported that the pop star’s payments to her ex had come to an end following Jayden turning 18 this week, it’s expected that Spears will have to keep paying out for another two months yet.

Addressing the matter, Federline’s attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said that, under California law, a parent must continue paying child support until their child has graduated high school, even if they turn 18.

Kaplan told People: “Under California law, child support jurisdiction continues until the minor child reaches the age of 18, or if upon their 18th birthday they have not yet graduated high school, it continues until they graduate high school, but in no event later than their 19th birthday.”

He went on: “The child support in this case for Jayden is being paid consistent with that law. His graduation for high school will be in November.”

Spears’ reps have been approached for comment.

The singer has long not had custody of her sons, something which has put a strain on their relationship.

Despite this, Jayden said in 2022 that he was confident that it ‘could be fixed’.

“I 100% think this can be fixed,” he told the Daily Mail. “It’s just going to take a lot of time and effort. I just want her to get better mentally. When she gets better I really want to see her again.”

Speaking directly to their mother, the teenager added: “I love you a lot, I hope for the best for you. Maybe one day we can sit down like this and talk again.”
