Chris Hemsworth has made some major adjustments to his lifestyle after learning that he’s at very high risk of suffering from Alzheimer’s disease later down the line.
The “Thor” actor, 40, discovered he’s at high risk for the disease while filming his National Geographic and Disney+ docuseries, “Limitless,” late last year.
Since then, he’s overhauled his day-to-day routine in a bid to incorporate “more solitude” into his life.
“I’ve always been pretty consistent with my exercise commitments, but lately I’ve really felt the importance of taking time for yourself without any outside voice or stimulation and making time for stillness,” the Aussie actor told Men’s Health.
Admitting that physical exercise has always been part of his routine, Hemsworth said he’s shifting his focus more on mindful work these days.
Hemsworth is also prioritizing sleep and takes regular ice baths to help his well-being.
“My weight fluctuates a lot due to differing roles and also my own interests in regards to challenging my body in different ways,” the CENTR fitness app founder shared.
“I’m lifting less frequently than I was and I’m incorporating more cardio and endurance workouts which I much prefer than heavy body-building style sessions.”
Because the Aussie’s DNA has two copies of the gene APOE4, he is “eight to 10 times more likely” to battle the progressive disease, which is characterized by mental deterioration.
Hemsworth, along with only two to three percent of the population, has a copy of the gene from both parents.
The father of three previously revealed that he is slowing down his acting career — but not retiring.
“Most of us, we like to avoid speaking about death,” he said earlier this year. “Then to all of a sudden be told some big indicators are actually pointing to this as the route which is going to happen, the reality of it sinks in. Your own mortality.”
Hemsworth said the Alzheimer’s warning “triggered something in me to want to take some time off.”
“I’ve been completing the things I was already contracted to do,” he said, adding that he plans to “go home and… to have a good chunk of time off and just simplify. Be with the kids, be with my wife.”
Hemsworth shares three children – India, 11, and twins Tristan and Sasha, 9 – with wife Elsa Pataky.
