Dana Carvey announces break from acting following son’s untimely death

Comedy star Dana Carvey has announced a break from acting.

The Hollywood favourite was forced to endure what all parents dread most earlier this week, after learning of the sudden passing of his 32-year-old son.

The Wayne’s World actor broke the news on Instagram that his ‘beloved’ comedian son Dex Carvey had died of an ‘accidental overdose‘ on Wednesday night.

In a joint statement made with his wife Paul Zwagerman, Carvey, 68, said the ‘terrible tragedy’ had happened on Wednesday night, adding: “We will miss him forever.”

He went on: “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things – music, art, film making, comedy – and pursued all of them passionately.

“It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends and his girlfriend Kaylee.

“Dex was a beautiful person. His handmade birthday cards are a treasure. We will miss him forever.”

The Saturday Night Live star added: “For anyone struggling with addiction or who lives someone struggling with addiction, you are in our hearts and prayers.”

He later posted a picture of himself and Dex working together – having starred side-by-side in several TV shows – saying it had been “a joy”.

And last night, Carvey – best known for having played Garth Algar alongside Mike Myers in 90s hits Wayne’s World and Wayne’s World 2, as well as for his seven seasons on SNL – has officially announced his temporary resignation from acting.

Again, taking to Instagram to make his announcement, Carvey – who also shares a 30-year-old son Thomas with wife Paula – thanked his followers for their ‘love’, ‘personal stories’ and ‘compassion’ following their loss.

“We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we can ever express in words,” he wrote.

“I will be taking a break from work and social media – trying to figure out what life looks like now we are a family of 3. We will heal the best we can and carry on.”

Carvey continued: “Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way. Much love, Dana x”.

Fans then continued to pour in their tributes, with one penning: “You are still a family of four, one simply has wings. Hugs and strength for the Carvey family”.

“I am glad you’re taking the time for yourself,” a second wrote. “Loss and grief are so hard, and losing a child is the hardest. I hope you and your family find piece and comfort in time.”

Another commented: “Something about Dana being sad hurts more than it should. Take care man.”
