The ability to enjoy the comfort of our own home, acquire new clothes, utilize gadgets, and have regular meals are among the many things we often take for granted.

When Joe and Jamie Walker arrived at their home with Joe’s adopted sons, Abraham and James, the boys were overwhelmed with joy. Abraham, reflecting on the experience, likened it to a glimpse of “second heaven,” believing that it was a stepping stone before reaching the ultimate paradise. Fortunately, the local orphanage provided them with refuge and shelter, until fate brought Joe and Jamie Walker into their lives. The compassionate couple decided to adopt the brothers, ensuring they would never be separated. Last fall, after completing the adoption process, Joe and Jamie, accompanied by Abraham and James, flew to Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Walkers experienced immense happiness as they witnessed the wonder in the boys’ eyes. Joe Walker joyfully shared with CBS News how the smallest things we take for granted, like opening the front gate upon arriving home, brought the boys tremendous excitement. Imagine the contrast of going from homelessness and destitution to belonging to a loving home filled with things they never dreamed of having.

“Everything is magic to them,” Joe added. Every new encounter filled them with awe and amazement. Even a simple carwash seemed like a miraculous event.

Then, on May 20 of last year, the family surprised Abraham on his 12th birthday. A video shared by Jamie captured the heartfelt moment as she entered the room carrying an orange cake adorned with candles, with Abraham’s name beautifully inscribed on it. Overwhelmed, Abraham burst into tears, unsure of how to respond. Tears of joy streamed down his face, radiating his profound happiness.

In Sierra Leone, birthdays were not celebrated, and the boys were uncertain of their own birth dates. It was the first time Abraham had his own cake and experienced the joy of celebrating his birthday. “I never celebrate them. I never knew it was my birthday,” Abraham expressed.

Instead of blowing out the candles, Abraham rushed towards his father, Joe, embracing him tightly. Then he turned to Jamie and embraced her. Abraham’s tears flowed freely. Everyone encouraged him to make a wish and blow out the candles, which he eventually did. Afterward, he again ran into his father’s arms, enveloping him in a loving embrace.

Amidst the laughter, it became evident that Abraham had forgotten to make a wish, as he was unaware of this customary practice. “When I saw the cake, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” Abraham shared. “It’s not just a birthday cake. It’s a blessing cake.”
