Céline Dion is a pinnacle name when it comes to the music industry. Her unique vocal tone and impressive singing abilities have helped the star catapult herself into a lifetime of fame and success, with a career spanning four decades.
Dion’s musical style has grown over the years while still staying pretty consistent to the genres of pop, soft rock, and chanson – French songs that are lyrically driven. Some of her most famous songs include “The Power of Love, “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now” and “My Heart Will Go On,” all of which have truly allowed the singer to showcase her powerful yet dreamy tone.
Dion’s discography has shown the trials and tribulations of relationships, through the most beautiful love stories to the hardest moments of heartbreak. At times, she specifically detailed her love for her longtime husband, Rene Angelil, prior to his death in January 2016. The singer was left heartbroken, as she had lost her partner of almost 30 years. Losing Angelil changed the dynamics of Dion’s home life as well as her desire to keep performing and writing music that meant something to her.
Fortunately for Dion, another Canadian star was in her corner. Actor Ryan Reynolds was there during the singer’s time of grievance, and he helped save her from her days filled with sorrow all by writing one sincere letter. Dion has proved to have an effervescent spirit full of hope and strength. Read on to find out more about how Reynolds’ words of affirmation helped Dion when she needed a friend the most.

A Thoughtful Note
Following the death of her husband, Dion struggled to find her passion for music. Angelil had a cancer scare earlier in his relationship with Dion, but it went into remission. However, he had another scare later on and had surgery in December 2013 for his throat cancer. Angelil was also working as Dion’s manager at the time and stepped down six months later. He died on Jan. 14, 2016 – just two days before his 74th birthday.
Dion performed Queen’s “The Show Must Go On” at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards in honor of her late husband. The singer later performed “Recovering,” a song written by Pink, to again honor Angelil. However, Dion was struggling to write her own music at the time. Fortunately, better times were ahead.
Although Reynolds played an anti-hero in “Deadpool” he has proven to be a superhero in real life. According to Cinema Blend, the film ended up doing extremely well at the box office despite its smaller budget compared to other comic book films. On top of that, the marketing was very attention-grabbing, including a music video featuring Dion alongside Reynolds as Deadpool for the 2018 film “Deadpool 2.” The video was for the song “Ashes,” which was also featured in the movie.
However, getting Dion involved in the matter was somewhat of a process, as the singer was still reeling from the loss of her husband, Angelil. Cinema Blend reported that Reynolds and the film team contacted Dion’s manager to help get her involved in the music video. Reynolds also wrote a letter to be given to Dion.

Making Music Again
Reynolds explained:
“Of course, the studio piles up a whole bunch of sort of millennial, friendly type singers that are all incredibly talented, but we just thought, ‘Let’s go right to the legend. Let’s see if we can get her.’ So we got a way in through her manager.”
He continued, “I sent her a long letter describing what ‘Deadpool’ is and what we’re hoping to do, and somehow she got… two hours later or something, she said yes. And then we said, ‘How about video?’ and she said yes to that, too!”
It seems like laughter really was the best medicine for Dion. There were – and still are – people out there who appreciated and valued her for her strength and talent. In 2019, Dion was finally ready to share more details about her heartbreak and hardships over the past few years with her album “Courage.”
According to Forbes, Dion said the album was “born of her personal tragedies.” She hand-selected the songs as a way to signify a new chapter in her career and she worked hard to leave the pain of the past behind. “We’ve all gone through stuff and in order to keep going we have to look inside ourselves and find the courage to move forward,” Dion said.
The singer also revealed that the letter from Reynolds had been a big inspiration to her during such a hard time. According to Forbes, Dion was jokingly disappointed that Reynolds didn’t ask her to act in “Deadpool 2,” but she was happy to write a song for the film, thus creating “Ashes.”
